Cuckoo's Nest: Is McMurphy an American Hero?

McMurphy's character from Cuckoo's Nest seems to express what many of you are saying America is all about in your blogs. For example, you have used words and phrases such as: never giving up, fighting for rights, revolution without fear, encouraging what is different, being strong-minded and proud, not letting others dictate what happiness should mean. . .Is McMurphy an American Hero then? Why or why not?

McMurphy is a pure American Hero. Throughout 'Cuckoo's Nest' McMurphy is constanly working to wake up what is American within the other patients. The word freedom or revolution come close but either we do not have a word for it in language or it was lost a long time ago. It is someone who can awaken this way that is an American Hero. McMurphy was just a man who could see the sun when it was covered with clouds.

I think that McMurphy would be recognized as an American hero because throughout Cuckoo's nest McMurphy fought against Nurse Ratched to make it a fair hospital and to stop Nurse Ratched's rule. He went through electroshock therapy because Nurse Ratched didn't like him acting up. He fought through pain and a dictator ship for what he thought was right, and thats what makes an American, An American

if we go with what we said on the blogs, then yes McMurphy is an american hero he sticks up for what he believes in and he fights for what he believes in. then useing that logic people like charles manson are also considered american heros. they both stood up for what they believed in they both were strong minded and proud and they both didnt let others dictate what happiness should mean. useing that logic previously stated above anyone can be an american hero, i could be an american hero. what a true american hero is, is someone who helps out not only america as a country but the whole world, like ben franklin and his invention of the light bulb. or albert einstien with his mathimatic advancements.thoes two peoople are prime examples of what an american hero is.

Yes, I believe that McMurphy is a true American hero. In 'Cuckoos Nest' he always faught for what he thought was right, as well as always trying to make the patients stronger, to be able to fight on their own. McMurphy help a patient escape from the psych ward, making him realize that he could go through life himself. He gave the patient the confidence of an American to do so.

McMurphy is a true American Hero. He was very commited to his belifes and wouldnt conform like the other patients. He tried to free the others from the hold of the big nurse like other hero's such as Jesus. I think Kesey tried to compair the two as McMurphy was a Martyr and when given the electric shock was laid on the table with his arms at a 90 degree angle which resembles Jesus on the cross. I think that McMurphys die hard attitude and refusal to conform give him the status of American Hero.

I dont think there is a real deffinition for an American hero. Sure some may think McMurphy is an American hero and some may not, its all up to what they think is an American hero. Yes McMurphy stands up for what he believes in and i think, personally, that is the main thing that ever other sub heading under an American hero branch off from.

McMurphy was an American Hero because he stood up for what he believed in. He fought Nurse Ratchet so that the hospital could be a better place. Also helped make the people around him stronger by standing up for himself in certain situations. He believed in everything he did and is considered an American Hero to me

McMurphy is an american hero. He is a hero because he stands up for what he belives in. He frights for the rights of the patients, and tries to weaken the big nurse's power. McMurphy also encoureges others to stand up for them selves, for example at the end when chief tries on his hat it is to small for him this symbolises his growing, and lac of need for McMurphy.
