Walt Whitman or Allen Ginsberg??

You have read Walt Whitman. . .Try one of Ginsberg's most famous poems "Howl" at the site below. Is he similar to or different from Walt Whitman in any ways? Which one do you like better? Why? Which one strikes you as the most "American" and why?

Ginsberg's poem is different from Whitman's. Whitman talks about him self saying how great he is, but Ginsberg talks about what iws wrong with the world. He cares about other people. Ginsberg also repetetion to create rythem in his peoms where Whitman has no rythem in is peoms. Ginsberg strikes me as the most American because he is trying to make our country a better place.

Ginsberg's writing style and quality of his poem is completely different from Whitman's. I have read the poem 'Howl' before, and i fell in love with it right away. Ginsberg's poetry is definitely more American than Whitman's. The things he talks about in his poem and the words he uses is more of the American style. You can almost picture being right there, in his poem, and you can visualize everything he is writing about. Whitman's poetry is boring and doesn't catch my attention. I could read his and just zone out, not realizing what it's really about.

I agree with tlanders Ginsberg talks about what has happened in the world around him. Also the Whitman only cares for himself. I like Ginsberg better than Whitman because he talks about the real world. The poet that strikes me as the most "American" is Ginsberg cause like i said before he talks about what is haooening in the world.

I agree with Jamie, "Howl" is truly an amazing poem and I enjoy it more so than Walt Whitman's poems. The two poems differ in many aspects. Ginsberg is right there, to near to even focus on, a chaotic bridge into our relations with the world while Whitman's poems seemed more spacious and personalized. Ginsberg poem is to me more American based on the fact that it relates more with society. "Howl" is truly remarkable, I feel after reading it a previously unknown understand, an understand of what I cannot explain.

Whitman's work is more concentrated around I. While Ginsberg is not he may start off with I but he is mostly talking about what he sees and not what he is. Whitman has no repitetion . While Ginsderg has is to try and hold the reader with something a little more fun than just reading the lines. I think that Ginsberg is more of an american writer.

Allen Ginsbergs poems are different from Walt Whitmans poems. Allen talks about other people, not just himself, while Whitman refers to himself, using I a lot. From reading 'Howl' I believe that Ginsberg is very good at writing poetry. It is very detailed, and deep. Pretty much telling a story, but in a poetic way. From what i remember of Whitmans poems, was just him takling about himself. to be honest i dont even remember any of his poems because they did not interest me.

in whitmans poem he talks about him self alot of the time while Ginsberg's poems talk more about the world. i feel that Ginsberg is a better poet because his poems are very deep and moveing. i liked Ginsberg's poem the best out of all of the poems we read this year.

Whitman is self centered in his poems and Ginsburg discusses religion, poverty, and people. Ginsberg is different compared to Whitman because of what they talk about. I like Ginsberg because he discusses problems of everyday life and issues that trouble people. He discusses what people do in the world in great detail. Whitman is just a self centered man who regurlarly talks about himself in his poems. I like Ginsberg more than Whitman cause he discusses issues.

Walt Whitman and Ginsberg's style of poetry are very different. "Howl" is a very good poem and it talks more about the American lifestyle. I like Ginsberg better than Whitman because i think that more people can relate to him and understand what point he is trying to get across. As you read "howl" you can almost picture everything that is happening and you can always get a certain reaction out of each action or word that is read.

Ginsberg's poems are much much different than whitmans. its different because it talks about the ugly side of life. the real sad side of how some people actualy live. i personaly like ginsberg better because its more real than any poem ive seen from whitman. not many people can write like that, capture an image so well in words.
