Sylvia Plath or Anne Sexton??

You learned about Sylvia Plath on Jamie's detailed Wikicenter project. Many people compare her poetry to that of Anne Sexton. Read Anne Sexton's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15300 then go back and read a poem by Sylvia Plath called "Morning Song" http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15293 . Do you notice any similarities or differences in the two writers' wording, style, or content?

I found that these two poets has many differences. Sectons poem was a stroy, and it was fairly long. Plaths poem on the other hand was short whit short sharp sentences. They both did not have rhyme and rythem.

No matter what, Sylvia Plath will always be the most amazing poet and writer to ever walk this planet. You need soul to be able to understand Plath's poems. Reading these two poems, I noticed there are differences and similarities. Plath uses words and phrases that not everyone would understand by reading the sentence once and moving on. You need to let your mind open up and absorb her writing. Sexton gets her point across in a very different way. She just says what needs to be said and doesn't leave any room for you to think, unlike Sylvia.

In the two poems they both talk about love. They both use imagery, for example, PLath says "Our voices echo, magnifying your arrival" and in Sexton's poem "cheeks as fragile as cigarette paper." Sexton uses paragraphs and PLath uses short three sentence stanzas.

I thought these poems were very different. Anne Sexton used a story to get her point across and used a large single imagery. Sylvia Plath I enjoyed more because of the fantastic imagery very spacious and crystalline. The length, the way of getting the images across and the personality found within the writing is all different to me.

Sexton had a much longer story while Plath was short and sweet. They did have similarities such as talking about love. There was not much repition or rhyming in either of their poems. Their styles were much different sexton had short stanzas while plaths poem was a long story. Also Plath had a lot of repition of sounds such as when she says "Pride pumped in her like poison."

Reading both of these poems, i realized that Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton have similarities and differences in their types of writings. Anne Sextons poem is more like a story, while Sylvias was more analytical, and you had to think about it more. They both use great amount of details, so you can get a picture in your mind. I really enjoy reading Plaths poetry, i think she is a great poet. All her poems capture me and make me think in ways i have never thought before.

I personally agree with tlanders and satori i feel that both of these pomes we diffrent in many ways like how the structure of the poem was written. in Sectons poem the structure was long and told a story while plath's poem was short sharp stanzas.

Plath has less of a poem to read and Sexton's tells a story in her poem. The content of each poem is different because Sexton is describing what is going on in a women's life and Plath's poem is like she is talking about you and describing the world around you. Plath makes you think about what she is saying in her poems. Sexton's poem is just a long story and does not make you think as much as Plath's poem

I think that these two poems were similar but also different. Anne Sexton's poem has short stanzas but they have a point. Sylvia's poem has longer lines in each stanza but the stanza as a whole is short.

I think that Jamie's comment is quite bias. She talking about Sylvia Plath being the best poet. She had one state of mind and is on a set path to destroy anyone who tries to compete with Sylvia. She claims you need "soul" to understand Plath's poems and no where does she ever state that this is her opinion. She is talking as if all of these were facts. I think that everyone should be able to express their own opinions and by the look of Jamie's comment it seems as if everyone one that say different is wrong.

The similarities between these two poems are that both of them do not rhyme. They're more like stories, not poems. The differences are the lenghts of the poems, Anne Sexton's poem is very long, and Sylvia Plath's poem is much shorter. Other similarity is that both poems talk about love. In order to understand these two poems I had to read them at least twice, and I really had to get into them and read carefully because they're written in such a complicated way. Both of these poems are very unique in their own categories.
