Emily Dickinson or ee cummings??

Last week we read the poetry of Emily Dickinson who was highly criticized for her unusual rhyming, rhythms, capitalization, etc. Even though ee cummings wrote decades after Dickinson, he, too, was criticized for similar reasons. Read a couple of his poems. http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15399 http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15403
What do you think? Which one is more unusual? More difficult to understand? Why? Which one do you prefer reading? Why? Should poetry have NO rules?

Before I read ee cummings' poem I thought that Dickinson was hard to understand. Cunnings' poem is just a couple of phrases that have no relevant meaning to each other. I prefer reading Dickonson because her peoms are almost like a puzzle, and the reader has to put all the peices together to find the meaning. Poetry should not have rules, because it is a way to express one selve

Poetry should never have any rules, because, it's all about expressing who you are. If there were rules for poetry, it WOULDN'T be poetry. Nobody ever created them, there's no book of rules for poetry. I liked the second poem better. But Dickinson is more unusual and her poems are much more difficult to understand.

EE Cummings poem "Buffalo Bill's" is very confusing to me i have no clue what is going on in the poem. I perfer reading the second one because i can understand it better and i like what it is talking about. A for poetry having No rules, i agree with Jamie alot of poets turn to poetry to express their feelings. Alot of people turn to poetry to say what they are thinkning and feeling.

I enjoyed ee cummings more because of his use of words. Cummings gave me a timeless pattern that orbited swiftly . Dickinson depending on your way of reading is more abstract and atleast to me more difficult to understand. Poetry is an art form, there can be no rules in art, art is blank canvas, art is life, life is art.

I dont think that i could choose between the two. They are both just expressing their own feelings. I don't think that poetry should have any rules. THis is because that is just another way to express yourself in the lines. Make the poems anyway you would like and just be yourself. To who is more unusual i would have to say ee cummings becuase his lines are not extended they just flow how he wants them to. I prefer to read either or it does not matter to me i enjoy reading both of their work.

In my opinion, poetry should not be critizied at all. Poems are peoples ways of expressing their emotions, thoughts, opinions, and no one should be critized for that. Dickensons poems are difficult for me to understand, but i think ee cumings poems are a little more difficult for me to understand. they have no meaning to it whatsoever. the first poem, Buffalo's Bill, i basically got that death was handsome. He should have more details and more of a story line behind it. To me it was as if he was throwing in different, random sentances. Therefore, i find myself to enjoy Emily Dickensons poems more, before i can somewhat understand her poems.

i agree with salino. the poem Buffalo Bill by ee cummings was very confuseing yet interesting at the same time. i preferr the second poem because it has more structure. also i feel that ee cummings poems are made for the more artisticly thinking people because i didnt follow anything in his poem.

EE Cummings wis more unusual because of how he takes words in his poem and connects them to make one long word. He also discusses a person and the seasons and how they affect the people. Poetry should not have any rules because that's what makes certain poetry so unique. I like reading EE Cummings because he talks about things out of the usual kind of. It is not more difficult to understand but you have to read the poem a few times to really understand it

I think that e.e. cummings' Buffalo Bill poem is more unusual. It is written very strangely and its somewhat hard to understand. I would rather prefer to read "anyone lived in a pretty how town". Its just easier to understand. Poetry should have no rules. Its a persons thoughts and feelings and it should be expressed anyway that certain individual wants.

EE Cumming's first poem about the Buffalo Bills is very hard to understand. It doesnt make any sense to me because the words are not connected to eachother and the flow of ideas is very poor. I like the second poem a lot better because it has a better structure, it rhymes, which makes it easier to read and understand, and its much more interesting.

I think ee cummings is harder to understand. his writing style is way to unusual for comprehension unless your an english teacher or you read it over and over. i would probably like to read emily dickonson more because it is easier to understand and i usually dont get poems like that until the main theme of it is explained to me.

I think that satori's comment is well put. He basically hits the nail on the head. He states "Poetry is an art form, there can be no rules in art, art is blank canvas, art is life, life is art." which i could not agree with more. He must of had put much time and effort in trying to put his thoughts down the way he did. I think that it is one of the better comments that I have read.
