Poetry Unit Final Thoughts

On a blog at the beginning of the Poetry Unit, most of you commented that you had very little experience with American poetry or poetry in general. After having studied one poet in depth and after learning about several other poets studied introduced by Mrs. O and by your classmates, what opinions do you have of American poets and poetry now? Which were your favorite and why? What characteristics of poetry do you tend to like? Which do you dislike?

I have had very little experience with reading american poetry before comming into this class. I found myself a little doubtfull that I would be able to relate to a poet, but after hearing about Alan Ginsberg, I found my self intrested in his work and life. He seemed to be a non conformist and his work did not conform to established forms. He wrote in mostly open form poems, I also like his spirituallity and his willingness to experiement with new ideas.

While learning about American poets I found a deep relation between their writings and things I have experienced. It is interesting to view American poetry over time because it shows influences that string over time as well as true individuals. My favorites would have to be Allen Ginsberg and Robert Frost. I tend to be interesting in poetry that conveys deep meaning, shows edges spirituality leaving the reader with the taste of diamonds in their mouth. Poetry in general as well as all art is not to be judged, if you look back in history you can see the problems with sensor judgment and how it effected poetry, for this reason I will not comment on dislikes.

I believe that American poets should be more recognized than they really are. They have inspired thousands if not millions of people over the years and make a big impact on everyday lives on ordinary people. My favorite poet was Carl Sandburg for many reasons. 1 because he grew up in a poor family and did not have much education, but he still became one of the greatest poets of all time. 2 he traveled as a hobo for years and no famous person i know of can say that they have done that. And 3 his travels as a hobo and his progresses through life shaped and inspired his writing. You can also see his inspiration when you read his poetry. I like poets who talk about events or something that can inspire other people. I don't like depressing poetry. I don't find it enjoyable and it does not keep me in a good mood.

i don't read at all, which is probably why i have problems reading and writing, but reading as little as i did of Edgar Allan Poe's work i figured out that reading some poetry isnt that bad, i write poetry but i hated reading it, after his style of dark depressed and showing your feelings kind of poetry i related to him and it felt good.

I have never been interested in poetry. After reading about several American poets and their poetry I can not say my opinon has chnaged. I do not like this poetry because it is not like normal reading where you read it and you become interested in a story. Poetry is more like random words thrown together.

i think my opinion still stands, i still dont care for poetry. if i had to say which was my favorite id have to say the guy that wrote "Howl" is my favorite. i liked him because he wrote about stuff that was real although it was depressing at points it was still capturing life at its darkest moments. i really didnt like the poems with the wierd punctuation and the poems that really made no sense

American poets are very insightful about everything that goes on in the world. They are very wise in the sense of the human emotions. Some of the poets have similar feelings to the way i percieve certain aspects of life. I would have to say Komunyakaa is my favorite because of the meaning of the poem. I like the rhymem pattern in poems and poems that are too complicated are poems i dislike.

When we went into the poetry unit i said to myself that i hate poetry and im not goin to learn anything. Well i was right and wrong. I still hate poetry because i just never liked it and dont. Poetry is not that apealling to me anyway. Although, I did learn alot about my poet i studied, Robert Frost. The one major characteristic that i like about some poems, is the fact that they are short.

All American poets have a lot of talent and deserved to be recognized more than they are. So much time and effort was put into their writing. I really liked Garrett and Rich's presentation on Ginsberg. I have always had such a huge love for poetry and poets, but learning about them in class and now truly understanding where they are coming from and why they wrote what they did, makes me even more interested in becoming more knowledgeable about poets and poetry.

When we had first started the unit I had only a small amount of knowledge about poetry. I only really knew that there were different writing styles that changed from writer to writer. Coming out of the unit now I have a better understanding of poetry and how to break it down to understand it. If I had to pick my favorite poet I would have to pick Emily Dickenson because I could really paint a picture from the words she wrote.

I did not have much experience with poetry but always enjoyed reading it. Now that i have read quite a bit more i still have about the same thoughts about it. I really enjoyed this unit. It is kind of disappointing it is over so soon.

After learning more about poetry my thoughts about it haven't changed because i still don't like it. But if i had to choose what kind of poets or poetry i like it would those that rhyme and aren't very long. If the poem is too long i tend to forget what it is about by the time i get to the end. Poetry is like a maze. It's not always written to be taken literrally, so you have to figure it out. And if it's too long, it gets confusing and is much harder to uderstand.

I personally like the american poetry unit. When we started i didnt think that I would like the poetry but now after reading and learning about american poets i learned that i like poetry. I now want to read other poets that may not be from america to see the diffrence from american poetry to other countries poetry. when i began i didnt like poetry because i thought everything had to rhyme and i thought it was hard but i learned that poetry is like an art form and that even if your bad you can still make poetry.
