Mental Blocks about Mental Illness

Doctors have learned so much in the past few decades about how to help those with mental health issues; my own family has benefited from several of these advances. Visit this health site that discusses many conditions and treatments that we have been discussing in class (see menu at left of the site's first page), and comment on what you learn. How can we help society understand these very common types of conditions better so that the negative stigma that surrounds them diminishes?

Although kids with Autism behave, think, communicate, and interact with others different doesn't mean that they need "special Treatment" for certain problems that they show the most. Just look at the one kid last year was on a basketball team. The coach put the kid in and he/she i forget made every 3 point shoot he/she shoot

These advancements in the science of mental health care have been a big advantage to people. I can speak personally on this matter having family members who have had bipolar disorder. One family member has turned his life around after receiving the approperate medication for this disorder. Often times people with bipolar disorder do not know that their is anything wrong with them so they tend to self medicate which can lead to addictions. Unattended to addictions can lead to jail, institutions and death but, theses medications can help prevent these horriable outcomes.

Although there have been many advances in the science of mental health there is still a great deal to be learned. The mental health system uses methods of treatment that can result in cure as well as making things worse. Abbie Hoffman, political activist and revolutionary, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Abbie took a drug called lithium to treat his illness and although it did help him at times the drugs disconnected him more than anything. Rocky Erikson, of the 13th Floor Elevators, was sentenced to a mental institution where he received electro shock therapy. In the end the treatment had drove Rocky mad and people started to notice him change. Rocky now spends his days in Texas where he watches eight televisions at a time everyday. The problem is in the power and depth of the treatments and how easily that can change everything.

Of course kids with autism need special treatment, not all kids with autism are like that kid that you saw on the news. The kid that you saw on the news did not have a severe case. if some people did not get special treatment who had autism, they might not be able to function in our socity

I absolutely agree with Satori's comment of "Mental Blocks about Mental Illness". Even though scientists have achieved a much higher level in the knowledge of Mental Illness, there is still a lot to be learned. The treatments that are being used can harm just as simply as help a person who uses them. Mental Illnes is a serious disease and has to be taken seriuosly. Scientists must keep working on the ways to treat such illnesses and keep trying to improve the negative or harmfull sides of the treatments.

I believe that many people who have Autism don't always have a severe case even though many people think that they are stupid and cannot function. Truth is that some people who have mental disabilities are very smart in some aspects of life. I also have something in common with frank and that is because i have a family member who has a disorder, but they have been treated and are almost back to normal. Science is multiplying by 5000 percent each year and eventually there will be a cure for everything. Right now there is a cure for cancer that i know of and a cure for diabetes. The advancement in technology is so rapid that eventually there will be no bipolar disorders, no people with autism, and no depression.

My little cousin has Autism and ADHD. Hes only 8 years old, and he can barely get through the day without getting into trouble. Everyone sees him as a nuisance but he isn't. He doesn't understand what hes doing and to him, being off the wall hyper is normal. He cant help having Autism and ADHD. He even made it onto the cover of Time Magazine because of him Autism.

I agree with tommy. Some kids with autism need special treatment. They need their own schools not to separate them but because public schools don't have enough resources to help them with their mental disability. The need special treatment to help them get over it for the best and just help them get along for the better.

Along the same lines of Tommy and Rich were talking about. Autistic children and teens need their own school not just to improve there leavening but to keep them safe. I know of many incidents that children and teens are ridiculed and alienated for having disabilities. I could not tell you what would compel someone to do things like this but it does happen and no person with disabilities deserves to be ridiculed.

i think that our society is useing medications way too much. people have medications for everything when many of peoples problem could be solved without medication. adhd can be solved throught therepudic pratices or medication but most a.d.d or a.d.h.d cases are solved by useing pills and medications.

My good friends little sister is autistic. I have watched her over the past year, and now that she is getting older, i do realize that she is different from most 4 year old kids. She has difficulties forming sentances, repeats things a lot, stutters. She has been getting treatment, and it has been working. without the treatment, she would probably not be able to speak words. However, there are more server cases of autism, and one who has a mild case may not need to recieve treatment.
