Censorship in Music

Most of you chose a song to analyze and share for the recent Persuasive Unit Project. Have the lyrics or music of any bands that you know been censored in any way? Are there situations in which censorship of music is appropriate? What about "clean" versions of songs? What about music videos? Another Mrs. O 80's flashback: Beastie Boys' "Fight for your Right to Party" video

The way that censorship in music is done well. There usually ends up to be two albums a censored and non censored. This is good because some of the language in music in not appropriate for children, along with restrictions to radio stations by the FCC on content being transmited. The only time that I would disagree with censorship would be if by editing the song it changed the message the wrighter was trying to send.

Yes, I have seen songs that have been censored. Most cd's have an edited version which has most of the foul language removed from it. Also known as a radio edit. I do believe that it is inappropriate for some children to be listening to. As Andrew said i do think that it is wrong to censor the writers thoughts and feelings, but as long as it still has his/hers main concept I think it is alright to edit the song.

Censorship in music at this present time prevents artists from advertising their work to underage minors by requring them to identify their questionably work with an explitive sticker. This seems an inappropriate request given that artists words and now their meaning are censored, which is to say that explitives are censored. This seems reasonable beacuse their work is still created, it is just marketed to mature audiences. As long as artists are given the freedom to create and produce their work it seems fair.

The only way it would be appropriate to censor music is if it was racial or some kind of other predjudice. i personaly dont know of any bands that are censored except some rap music which i dont listen to anyway. If the songs message was changed then the author would have to find another way to expressing it.

I don't believe that the lyrics were ever censored in any way. It was a big conflict and not many people agreed with the song, but it was never censored. There are certain songs that should be censored for bad language or if its offensive to a certain group of people. Clean versions of songs are just meant to keep songs from offending anyone or to keep bad words out of a child's mind. Music video's are sometimes exotic but they are there for people to enjoy and to entertain. If parents don't want their children watching it then they shouldn't let them.

It wasn't the LYRICS that were censored, CJ, it was the video because it had a huge blow-up balloon of a phallic symbol, just for everyone's information.

There are plenty of bands whose lyrics have been censored. When music is played on the radio, obviously some censorship is a good thing, the radio stations don't know how old their listeners are. Clean versions of songs are better than censored versions, I personally think censored songs are ruined by all of the blank sentences. Music videos are normally always censored due to the fact they're being shown on national television.

I encourage a free flow of writting and full expression by the creator. The creator of music should be able to say and do whatever helps him or her express their message. The way censorship is ran today is ok to me. People should have the choice if they want whether or not they want something edited. As long as the choice between the two exists and there is not only censored I feel a need to compromise.

Yes, censorship is in a great amount of music. Many songs are edited, getting rid of curse words, sexual words, violence ect. i believe that music being censored is a good thing. This will help children from hearing inappropriate lyrics. However, having songs censored can sometimes ruin the song. it can take away from what the writer of the song really felt, and strong words can also sometimes help bring a point across. Most music videos are innapropriate, which should also be edited for children.

i believe with andrew. censorship in songs is done pretty well. i like the fact that they dont restrict what the music artist wants to say in their song. if foul languange wasnt allowed in songs i think most songs would lose their meaning. artists sometimes uses foul language to make a point and i like that the gov. doesnt restrict that they just make it so there is a "clean" version.

I believe that censorship is necessary in some cases because younger kids like the music that some artists are putting out there but their parents dont allow the language. So these kids are forced to listen to other music in which they are not interested in. Hence forth the censorship of clean albums comes into play. I also agree with Andrew M. because he emphisises on the fact that they put both a clean album and a regular album. I think that censorship is helpful in many ways.

When ever i get a new cd i make sure that it is not censored. They way to make sure is if it has the "Parental Adivory" sticker on it, I then know that it is the dirty version. I can not stand the clean versions of songs. I hate it when, in the clean version, they get to a word and it is just silent because the track has been censored. Music video on the other hand are different. When you watch it on T.V. they usually blurr out the words on the artists shirt and, they also silent the certain word. Sometimes they artist make a different version of the song just for the music video and the clean version of their album.

Censorship in music is very appropriote. Some of the lyrics in music are inappropriete for children, and because it can be on the radio you can not controll what you hear, unlike a book which you can control what you read. If people wanted to hear the music unscensred they can buy it on a cd.

Felipe says: no i actually dont know any bands who have been cencored in any way, well cencored in the way where the government doesnt let them play anymore. actually thats a lie rammstein a german metal band was banned to play their songs in a concert in the U.S.A a few years ago. i think that freedom of speech is much more appropriate then censoring songs, if they wanna write it with those words let them, theres no excuse for cencoring music, i hate when they do the clean version cause thats pretty much like cencoring, and with music videos.
